Symposium on Science Education 2025

The 12th Symposium on Science Education (SoSE 2025) was held virtually on 23 August 2025, focusing on innovative and effective STEM teaching methods. With the theme “Advancing STEM Education through Transformative Pedagogy,” the event highlighted the role of digital technologies in engaging students, especially during challenging times. Responding to declining STEM enrolments nationwide, UTAR and education policymakers aim to sustain student interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, ensuring the country’s progress and fostering long-term enthusiasm for STEM education.
FICT students win silver for AI-powered scam detection app at international skills competition
9 September 2025
A UTAR FICT team won the Silver Award at the 2025 World Vocational College Skills Competition (Southeast Asia Division) in Cambodia, showcasing their AI-powered app, Spamurai, for real-time scam and spam detection. The project demonstrated practical innovation, problem-solving, and societal impact, enhancing digital safety. The team credited UTAR’s hands-on learning, applied research, and industry-linked courses for their success, highlighting the role of quality education in equipping students with technical skills, critical thinking, and creativity for meaningful, real-world solutions.
Young artists inspire unity at PEACE poster competition 2025

The PEACE Poster Competition 2025 at UTAR Kampar Campus brought together 48 young students to express unity and harmony through art under the theme “Together as One.” Organised by CFS and the Lions Club of Kampar, the event featured three categories for different age groups, judged by UTAR and Lions Club representatives. Winners received cash prizes, while all participants showcased creativity, compassion, and critical thinking. The competition nurtured young talent, promoted community values, and inspired students to envision and advocate for a more peaceful, inclusive world.
Guest lecture explores social media, tourism and renewable energy in Algeria

UTAR’s Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) hosted guest lecturers Dr Lagraa Meriem and Dr Djouahra Saliha from Algeria, providing students with insights into sustainable tourism, renewable energy, and the digital economy. UTAR and YTL Foundation bring festive cheer and STEM learning to the community
13 December 2024
The YTL STEM Holiday Programme and Christmas Party 2024, organised by YTL Foundation and UTAR CFS-SL, combined festive cheer with STEM learning for over 330 participants, including refugee children, Orang Asli youths, and local communities. Across six sessions at SEMOA Farm, 54C Learning Space, and Pustaka KL, participants engaged in hands-on STEM workshops and festive crafts. UTAR staff and student volunteers guided activities like goat heart dissections, DIY hand gel, and Christmas ornament-making, promoting creativity, interactive learning, and community engagement.
UTAR signs MoU and MoA with Stampede Solutions Sdn Bhd
12 December 2024
UTAR and Stampede Solution Sdn Bhd formalised a partnership through an MoU and MoA at Sungai Long Campus, establishing a framework for academia-industry collaboration. The agreement includes knowledge exchange, curriculum enhancement, industrial visits, joint research, and career development initiatives. Stampede Solution also introduced an Education Sponsorship Programme to support deserving students. The collaboration aims to align education with industry needs, preparing graduates with practical skills and promoting innovation, academic excellence, and a future-ready workforce in Malaysia’s digital economy.
STEM outreach programme for SMK Convent Kajang students
12 December 2024
Eighty-two students and six teachers from SMK Convent Kajang visited UTAR Sungai Long Campus under the UTAR STEM Outreach programme, organised by LKC FES, CFS, and DPP. The visit featured two engaging workshop tracks: STEM sessions on Computer Networks and Scratch programming led by LKC FES academics, and a Colourful Minds Therapeutic Watercolour Painting Workshop conducted by Puan Suriati. Students also toured the campus, gaining insights into university life. The event promoted creativity, collaboration, practical learning, and inspired enthusiasm for STEM and higher education opportunities.
Agreements with Memorial University of Newfoundland expands students' horizons

UTAR and Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), Canada, formalised a Mutual Credit Recognition agreement for their master’s programmes, allowing students to study one year at each institution and earn dual degrees. Covering UTAR’s Master of Environmental Technology and MUN’s Master of Applied Science in Environmental Systems Engineering and Management, the collaboration provides cross-cultural academic exposure, sustainability-focused learning, and practical expertise, fostering interdisciplinary knowledge, global readiness, and a strong commitment to internationally relevant education.
AUT students explore cultural horizons on a Malaysian journey

UTAR hosted a six-week inbound study tour for Auckland University of Technology students themed Technology, AI, and Culture in Professional Communication Practice. The programme combined academic learning, cultural immersion, and community engagement, exposing students to Malaysian heritage, traditional arts, cuisine, and sustainability initiatives. Participants also joined UTAR’s WE CARE, WE ACT projects, fostering cross-cultural understanding, leadership, and collaboration, while equipping them with knowledge, empathy, and global perspectives to become future-ready, culturally aware leaders.
Launching of UTAR International Institute of Media

UTAR launched the International Institute of Media (IIM) at its Sungai Long Campus, a collaborative initiative with Mango Media Sdn Bhd. IIM integrates industry resources and academic expertise to provide students with global media exposure and practical experience in VR, AR, AI, and traditional media. The Institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, internships, and professional mentorship, preparing students for the evolving media landscape. The launch featured industry leaders, cultural performances, and highlighted UTAR’s commitment to nurturing globally competent media professionals.
STEM workshops for Chung Hua High School Seremban students

UTAR STEM Outreach, with LKC FES, FCI, and DPP, hosted a STEM Workshop for 31 Senior Three students from Chung Hua Independent High School, Seremban, at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. Workshops included structural design, DIY hand sanitiser, materials science, and 2D game creation, led by experienced academics. Participants also toured the campus and learned about UTAR programmes. The event fostered creativity and curiosity while promoting SDGs, particularly Quality Education, Industry Innovation, and Good Health, highlighting UTAR’s commitment to sustainable learning and development.
Public lecture on trends and crises in social science research

The Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) at UTAR Kampar Campus hosted a hybrid public lecture by Adjunct Professor N. Prabha Unnithan from Colorado State University on 4 December 2024, titled Trends and Crises in Social Science Research. Prof Prabha discussed six key crises in social science research, including authorship, peer-review bias, reproducibility, journal proliferation, predatory publishing, and plagiarism, highlighting their impact on academic integrity. The lecture, attended by faculty, students, and the public, concluded with a Q&A, inspiring participants to address challenges and uphold research excellence.

Chong Hwa independent high school students participate in UTAR STEM outreach programme

A group of 38 Senior Three students from Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur, joined UTAR Kampar Campus for a STEM Science Education and Outreach Programme. Organised by UTAR STEM Outreach with the Faculty of Science, the programme featured hands-on activities including an Agriculture Park visit to learn about crop cultivation and animal domestication, and a microbiology workshop on aseptic microbial culturing and microscope observation. The event provided immersive, practical STEM learning, fostering curiosity and understanding of science and technology.
UTAR surgical society clinches championship in prestigious medical competition

The UTAR Surgical Society team won the 2nd International Intervarsity Surgical Based Quiz 2024, demonstrating exceptional medical knowledge and teamwork. Year 5 MBBS students Kang Shu Ting, Soh Joe, and Shun Kah Hoe excelled across four challenging rounds under the guidance of Dr Yan Naing Soe and Dr Divyangana Kiran Vartak. The victory enhanced the students’ understanding of surgery, strengthened their professional skills, and highlighted the importance of mentorship and collaboration in medical education, inspiring their continued commitment to the field.
Magallanes world study tour 3.0 steps into sustainable future

The Magallanes World Study Tour (MWST) 3.0, organised by UTAR’s Office of International Affairs, offered a virtual global learning experience connecting eight universities. With the theme “Discover Urban Nature: Step into a Sustainable Future,” participants explored sustainable urban development, low-carbon initiatives, and climate-resilient cities. UTAR academic participates in 24th animation academy awards by Beijing Film Academy

From 30 October to 3 November 2024, representatives from universities across Europe, Oceania, and Asia participated in the 24th Animation Academy Awards hosted by the Beijing Film Academy (BFA). The event brought together animation professionals, educators, and students from renowned universities worldwide, including UTAR, to celebrate excellence in animation and discuss emerging industry trends. A key highlight was UTAR’s participation in the International Forum on Advanced Animation Education—Innovation in the Cultivation of Animation Talents & Educational Concepts in the AI Era.
Gold award for groundbreaking AI integration in education at iNVENTX 2024

Faculty of Creative Industries academic Mr Ahmad Syawal bin Mohd Lajis won a Gold Award at the iNVENTX Invention Exhibition 2024 for his research poster, Framework Integration of AI in Online Project-Based Learning (PjBL). His study explored innovative AI integration to enhance online PjBL, fostering deeper student engagement, personalised learning, and improved critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Held at UTAR Kampar Campus and organised by the Centre Student Development Committee, the 10-hour event provided participants with an opportunity to showcase their chess skills and strategic thinking.
STEM workshops for SMK Horley Methodist students

UTAR hosted the SciTech4U STEM Camp MOSTI 2024, engaging students in hands-on workshops at Kampar Campus. A key session, the Handmade Sanitiser Workshop led by FEGT academics, taught participants how to create safe hand sanitisers while highlighting proper hygiene to prevent disease spread. Other workshops included drones, 3D printing, and engineering challenges. The event combined STEM learning with practical health lessons, equipping students with skills and knowledge to maintain hygiene and contribute to cleaner, safer environments.
UTAR hosts the first Asian Physics Olympiad (APho) in Malaysia

The Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) 2024 took place at UTAR Kampar Campus, marking the first time Malaysia hosted this prestigious event. The annual Physics Olympiad is more than a competition; it celebrates knowledge, curiosity, and the pursuit of scientific understanding. Top poster presentation awards at 14th Malaysian Symposium of Biomedical Science 2024

Goh Chia Yee and Phang Chun Zhong, UTAR Faculty of Science Biomedical Science students, won first and second prizes for Best Poster Presenter in the “Others” and “Natural Products” categories at the 14th Malaysian Symposium of Biomedical Science 2024. The annual symposium, hosted by biomedical science students from various Malaysian universities since 2010, provides undergraduates a platform to showcase research from their final year projects through poster and oral presentations, fostering academic exchange and recognition.

UTAR STEM outreach captivates young minds with innovative STEM activities

UTAR STEM Outreach, in collaboration with FSc, FEGT, and CFS Kampar, hosted the 17th MICSS Science Camp at UTAR Kampar Campus, engaging 247 students in 21 hands-on STEM activities. Participants rotated between interactive workshops and a campus tour, exploring diverse fields such as environmental science, industrial engineering, coding, and chemistry. Led by UTAR academics and students, the camp offered immersive learning experiences that nurtured curiosity, problem-solving abilities, practical skills, and scientific thinking, exemplifying UTAR’s dedication to quality education and inspiring future innovators.
CFS empowers young minds through its holistic school engagement initiatives

Aimed at laying a solid foundation for the students’ English language proficiency and communication skills, UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) hosted a vibrant school engagement project titled Adventure in Word: Exploring English Together for 48 students ranging from Standard 1 to Standard 6 at SJK(T) Kinta Valley. Held on 22 and 23 April 2024, the project was designed to familiarise students with basic grammar principles, sentence construction, and language usage, while developing their abilities to organise thoughts and express themselves coherently and confidently in English.
Celebrating tradition and talent through the first UTAR lion dance championship

The inaugural UTAR Lion Dance Championship roared to life as 20 lion dance teams from across Malaysia converged at Dewan Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, UTAR Kampar Campus. Organised by the UTAR Kampar Campus Wushu Club, the championship showcased the artistry, athleticism, and precision of lion dance performers while emphasising teamwork, discipline, and cultural pride. The event also highlighted the importance of preserving this ancient cultural heritage, fostering appreciation among students and the wider community, and promoting inter-university collaboration in traditional performing arts.
Advertising student clinches silver award at AAEN 2024 student competition

Glimmering in her success of securing the silver award at the Asia Advertising & PR Education Network (AAEN) Student Competition was Loon Qiao Lin, a Bachelor of Communication (Honours) Advertising student from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS). Hosted by Hallym University in Gangwon, South Korea, the competition challenged students to demonstrate creativity, strategy, and communication skills. Loon impressed the judges with her Integrated Marketing Communication Campaign proposal, titled “Chasing Season in Gangwon-derland,” showcasing innovation, practical insights, and strong presentation abilities.
UTAR participates in first China-Malaysia youth exchange forum

The first China-Malaysia Youth Exchange Forum was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Over 50 guests and representatives from academia, businesses, and youth organisations attended the forum, including Tsinghua University, the University of Malaya, UTAR, TusStar Malaysia, GRADUAN Malaysia and Junior Chamber International Bukit Mertajam. This forum aimed to deepen friendly exchanges among the Chinese and Malaysian youth. Taking place on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, the forum sought to contribute to the promotion of cultural understanding and forge a new chapter in the friendship between the youth of both nations.
Fsc hosts food safety training

The Centre for Agricultural and Food Research hosted a two-day “Food Safety Training: Principles and Certification” at UTAR Kampar Campus, attended by over 30 participants, including chefs, food handlers, students, and healthcare providers. Covering hygiene, food handling, waste management, and regulatory compliance, the training emphasised safe, high-quality food production. Sponsored by EcoLab International, GoodMorning Global, and STO SEA, it equipped participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to safeguard public health, uphold food standards, and promote responsible food practices in Malaysia's communities.

UTAR’s Faculty of Science, in collaboration with Jinan University, hosted the annual JNU-UTAR Webinar Series on Food Science and Technology via Zoom, attended by over 140 participants. Speakers Dr Lu Xuanxuan and Dr Chay Shyan Yea presented on black rice particle-stabilised Pickering emulsions and biopeptides from winged bean with blood-pressure-lowering potential, highlighting natural, functional food innovations. The webinar promoted knowledge sharing on safe, nutritious, and sustainable food production, encouraging research and practices that reduce reliance on synthetic additives while supporting health and environmentally conscious food systems.

Participants explored faculties, gained practical STEM skills, and received prizes and certificates, fostering curiosity and critical thinking.

The webinar “Self-care of Caregivers of Dementia,” organised by UTAR’s Centre for Corporate and Community Development with Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement, highlighted the importance of supporting caregivers’ well-being. Lecturer Tay Kok Wai discussed challenges such as stress, social isolation, financial concerns, and mental health issues. He shared strategies including relaxation, deep breathing, muscle relaxation, engaging in pleasant activities, and seeking support. The session emphasised maintaining caregivers’ mental and emotional health to ensure sustained, effective care for dementia patients.
