SDG 2 Zero Hunger
2.2.1 Campus Food Waste Tracking
UTAR is committed to sustainable campus operations, integrating structured food-waste tracking as part of its environmental stewardship strategy. Campus food waste is systematically monitored across dining halls, cafeterias, and food-service partners to quantify disposal trends, identify peak-generation points, and support targeted reduction measures. By maintaining proper records documented by campus food operators, UTAR ensures accurate food-waste tracking for trend analysis and targeted reduction strategies. UTAR transforms waste data into actionable insights that guide awareness campaigns, meal-planning improvements, and responsible consumption initiatives. This data-driven approach strengthens operational efficiency and encourages behavioural change within the campus community. Continuous tracking also enables transparent reporting and long-term benchmarking to measure progress toward waste-diversion goals. Through this initiative, UTAR fosters a greener food ecosystem, supporting national sustainability priorities while cultivating a culture of accountability, innovation, and resource conservation among students and staff.
The bar chart below illustrates the University’s total food waste generation for 2024, amounting to 1,612 kg. In response to this, UTAR has partner with industry to place the food composting machine in the campus to process the waste generated on campus. This initiative demonstrates UTAR’s strong commitment to building a more sustainable environment and fostering a greener, eco-conscious campus community.
