Sustainable Literacy

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) measures sustainable literacy to understand students’ awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours regarding sustainability and global challenges. The university conducts structured assessments, including sustainability perception surveys, SDG awareness evaluations, campus lifestyle audits, and interdisciplinary learning outcome reviews aligned with sustainable development principles. Sustainable literacy levels are further analysed through project-based participation such as green campaigns, energy and water conservation tracking, community engagement, and eco-innovation activities. UTAR also integrates sustainability content into academic programmes, encouraging students to apply environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concepts in real-world problem solving. The collected data allows UTAR to benchmark sustainable literacy, identify knowledge gaps, improve educational strategies, and strengthen SDG-driven initiatives across campus. This continuous measurement ensures students are not only informed about sustainability issues but are also equipped with the mindset and competency to contribute toward a responsible and sustainable future. The figure below shows the 2024/2025 sustainability literacy survey conducted among UTAR students.

HESI membership enhances global collaboration, research, and visibility, while supporting UTAR’s mission to integrate sustainability across education, research, governance, and its contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.

UTAR has officially brcome a member of the UN-backed Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). This membership enhances the University’s role in tackling global sustainability challenges through international collaboration, research, and policy engagement. UTAR and Palm Grove Herb Valley Sdn Bhd exchange MoU to advance herbal research and wellness innovation

16 October 2025

UTAR and Palm Grove Herb Valley (PGHV) formalized a partnership through a memorandum of understanding to advance herbal research, sustainable agriculture, and wellness innovation. The collaboration focuses on sustainable herb farming, developing herbal and health products, and scientific studies on bioactive compounds. UTAR students gain hands-on experience at PGHV’s plantation, while both parties engage in joint research, publications, and training. This partnership promotes innovation, community well-being, and resilient food and nutrition systems, supporting healthier, more sustainable communities.

ESG forum 2025 explores the role of AI in driving a sustainable future

23 July 2025

UTAR, in collaboration with the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), hosted the 3rd International ESG Forum 2025 at Sungai Long Campus in hybrid mode. Themed Harnessing AI for ESG: Pathways to a Sustainable Future, the forum gathered academics, industry experts, researchers, and students to examine AI’s role in advancing ESG practices. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, the event fostered knowledge exchange, international collaboration, and innovative solutions, highlighting UTAR’s commitment to research excellence and global engagement.

UTAR joins prestigious UN-led sustainability initiative

UTAR has reached a major sustainability milestone by joining the United Nations-endorsed Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI), reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship, academic excellence, and global engagement. This membership enables UTAR to participate in collaborative research, capacity-building programmes, and international forums, showcasing its sustainability achievements. By integrating sustainability into education, policy, and campus culture, the University prepares students as responsible global leaders. Maritime talk charts the future course of local SBSR industry

25 February 2025

UTAR Faculty of Science, in collaboration with CILT Malaysia and the UTAR Logistics & International Shipping Society, hosted En Nazery Khalid to share insights on Malaysia’s shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry. The talk highlighted maritime history, key ports, major industry players, and government support schemes, emphasizing the sector’s economic importance. Students gained knowledge on logistics, emerging technologies such as AI, and industry opportunities, while also learning about sustainable practices, industrial innovation, career pathways, and strategies that enhance Malaysia’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen its global trade connectivity.

CKGSB and UTAR host ASEAN new economy leadership programme for China business leaders

12 December 2024

UTAR’s Institute of Management and Leadership Development, in collaboration with Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, hosted the ASEAN New Economy Leadership Programme – Malaysia Module, uniting business leaders and experts to explore investment and growth opportunities in Malaysia. The programme featured interactive sessions, site visits to Proton and Halal Development Corporation, and discussions on sectors such as semiconductors, logistics, and construction. Highlights included a youth development MoU with TH Talent Harbour Fund and the Tree of Friendship, fostering stronger Malaysia-China business ties and cross-border collaboration.

UTAR team joins hands for NCSM's relay for life 2024 Perak

8 December 2024

A team of 10 UTAR staff members and students actively volunteered at the “Relay for Life 2024 Perak”, held at Padang Polo, Ipoh, on 8 December 2024. Organised by the National Cancer Society Malaysia, the half-day event brought together over 800 participants to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and raise funds for cancer support initiatives. UTAR proudly contributed to this meaningful cause, demonstrating its commitment to community service, promoting cancer awareness, and supporting vital health initiatives. The university also expresses heartfelt gratitude to the organisers, participants, and fellow volunteers for their dedication and efforts.

Launching of UTAR International Institute of Media

4 December 2024

UTAR launched the International Institute of Media (IIM) at its Sungai Long Campus, a collaborative initiative with Mango Media Sdn Bhd. IIM integrates industry resources and academic expertise to provide students with global media exposure and practical experience in VR, AR, AI, and traditional media. The Institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, internships, and professional mentorship, preparing students for the evolving media landscape. The launch featured industry leaders, cultural performances, and highlighted UTAR’s commitment to nurturing globally competent media professionals.

UTAR seals UAiTED partnership aimed at fostering talents

28 November 2024

UTAR formalised a partnership with Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation under the University Alliance in Talent Education Development (UAiTED) through an MoU, joined by 16 local and international institutions. The collaboration aims to develop global talent via cross-regional, multicultural, and interdisciplinary initiatives, including internships, courses, innovation programmes, and industry-academia projects. At the UAiTED 2024 Governing Board Meeting in Taiwan, discussions on education, healthcare, AI, ESG, and sustainability promoted cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Bridging ties with Ayurveda treatments

8 December 2024

The Government of India, Ministry of Ayush, and Indian High Commission visited UTAR Kampar Campus to explore expanding Ayurveda treatments in Perak. Hosted by UTAR leaders, the delegation discussed potential collaborations in education, research, and healthcare at UTAR Hospital’s T&CM Centre. Plans included establishing an India-Malaysia Centre for Ayurvedic Medicine, integrating Ayurveda with modern healthcare, enhancing staff expertise, promoting research, and cultivating medicinal plants. The partnership aims to advance integrative care, boost medical tourism, and benefit the local community.

UTAR solidifies partnership with IFM Tanzania

29 October 2024

The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Finance Management (IFM) Tanzania is a testimony of another successful collaboration and UTAR’s commitment to substantiate its internalisation efforts. The signing ceremony took place on 29 October 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus. Signing on behalf of IFM was its Rector Prof Josephat Daniel Lotto, and the witness was its Deputy Rector for Academic, Research and Consultancy Dr Faraja Teddy Igira. From UTAR, President Prof Dr Ewe signed the document, and Vice President for Prof Dr Choong signed as the witness.

UTAR green ambassador programme 2024 honoured at river care awarding and recognition ceremony

26 September 2024

UTAR was honoured at the 2024 River Care Awarding and Recognition Ceremony for its contributions to environmental sustainability through the UTAR Green Ambassador Programme. The initiative, coordinated under the UTAR Green Campus Committee, engaged 12 ambassadors in river monitoring, restoration, education, and community outreach in the Kinta River Basin. Conducted in collaboration with the Global Environment Centre, JPS Negeri Perak, and Yayasan Hasanah, the programme exemplifies SDG 17 by fostering partnerships between the university, government agencies, and NGOs to advance sustainable practices and community engagement.

UTAR strengthens ties and explores collaboration with institutions in China

19 August 2024

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between UTAR and Beijing Film Academy, formalized by Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe and Vice President Mr Tong Lei, to strengthen collaboration in film and media studies. The agreement seeks to facilitate joint programmes, study tours, and student exchanges, enhancing academic and cultural engagement between the institutions. The following day, on 20 August 2024, Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe and his team visited SinoCarbon Innovation & Investment Co. Ltd. to explore potential partnerships in research, forums, and training focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, fostering sustainable development and knowledge exchange.

Fsc Department of agricultural and food science's first musk melons

30 November 2023

UTAR’s Faculty of Science celebrated the first harvest of musk melons at the Green House of Agriculture Park, Kampar Campus, guided by Dr Ali Yassoralipour and Hami Eco Farm Sdn Bhd. The initiative allows students to research sustainable food production, improve soil fertility, and increase yields while minimizing environmental impact. Through hands-on learning, students gain awareness of responsible farming practices, resource conservation, and environmentally friendly techniques that enhance productivity, support ecosystems, and promote long-term food security and community well-being.

UTAR staff promote nature journaling and give out air-purifying plants at Hari Sukan Negara

15 October 2023

UTAR participated as an exhibitor at the “Hari Sukan Negara Daerah Hulu Langat & Program Bandar Baru Bangi Pagi Tanpa Kenderaan 2023” at Taman Tasik Cempaka. Representatives from the Department of Student Affairs and Centre for Foundation Studies promoted nature journaling and encouraged the public to plant air-purifying indoor plants. Attendees actively engaged with the exhibits, and all plants were distributed. The UTAR Green Campus Committee received a certificate of appreciation from Majlis Perbandaran Kajang for their contribution to raising awareness on sustainability and fostering eco-friendly practices.

First International ESG forum by UTAR

The First International ESG Forum, themed Cultivation and Practices towards Sustainability, was organised by UTAR ESG and SDGs Committee, DSSC, and DCInterNet. The forum brought together global experts to discuss environmental, social, and governance issues, sustainable practices, and universities’ roles in shaping society. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, participants explored sustainability challenges, opportunities, and strategies. UTAR leaders emphasised collaboration, education, and innovation as key drivers for advancing ESG practices and fostering impactful change.

Webinar on environmental, social governance in the finance sector

5 April 2023

The Centre for Accounting, Banking and Finance (CABF) hosted a talk on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in the Finance Sector, presented by Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Leong Kah Hon. The session introduced ESG concepts, Green Finance, and their role in sustainable investing, highlighting transparency, accountability, and risk management as key qualities. Participants learned about ESG implementation, industry challenges, and Malaysia’s incentives, gaining practical insights into integrating ESG practices for responsible investment and sustainable development.
