Young artists inspire unity at PEACE poster competition 2025
21 September 2025
The PEACE Poster Competition 2025, themed Together as One, brought young students together to express their visions of peace, unity, and harmony through creativity. Organised by UTAR’s Centre for Foundation Studies and the Lions Club of Kampar, the event drew 48 participants across three age-based categories, each guided by judges and emcees. Winners were recognised with prizes, fostering a sense of achievement and community spirit. The competition emphasised the value of nurturing young leaders, promoting empathy, cultural understanding, and collaboration, leaving a powerful message that lasting peace begins with awareness and mutual respect.
UTAR SRC 2025/2026 takes the torch forward at the 2025 installation ceremony
5 August 2025
The UTAR Student Representative Council (SRC) 2025/2026 officially assumed leadership from the outgoing SRC 2024/2025 at the Handover and Installation Ceremony. The event, held at Kampar Campus, celebrated continuity, collaboration, and student service. Outgoing members shared reflections and encouragement, while newly elected leaders pledged to serve the student community, advocate for students’ needs, and foster teamwork. University management and staff attended, recognising the contributions of the outgoing council. Certificates, tokens, and a symbolic passing of the torch marked the legacy of leadership, integrity, and dedication.
Celebrating unity in diversity at UTAR merdeka carnical 2025

The Merdeka Carnival 2025 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus celebrated Malaysia’s Independence Day, promoting patriotism, unity, and cultural diversity. Organised by the Department of Student Affairs, the event featured national anthem and Rukun Negara recitals, speeches by dignitaries emphasising national togetherness, and a symbolic launch. Highlights included essay writing, state-inspired office decoration, and 3D Merdeka craft competitions, showcasing creativity and patriotism. Prize-giving recognised outstanding participants, while cultural and musical performances filled the hall with festive spirit, reinforcing the importance of harmony, diversity, and shared national pride.
Professor Dr Cheah Phaik Kin appointed to the Advisory Board at University of Virginia's Center for Public Safety and Justice

Prof Dr Cheah Phaik Kin of UTAR’s Faculty of Arts and Social Science has been appointed to the Board of Advisors at the University of Virginia’s Center for Public Safety and Justice (2024–2026). Recognised for her expertise in public safety and volunteer policing, she brings extensive research, practical experience, and global insights. Her role includes strategic guidance, mentoring, and fostering initiatives to enhance community resilience, bridge research and practice, and advance innovative public safety strategies worldwide.

Prof Dr Cheah Phaik Kin of UTAR’s Faculty of Arts and Social Science has been appointed to the Board of Advisors at the University of Virginia’s Center for Public Safety and Justice, recognising her expertise in public safety and volunteer policing. With extensive research, international presentations, and hands-on experience with the Royal Malaysia Police Volunteer Reserve, she provides strategic guidance, mentors students, and advises on innovative programmes. Her work advances community safety, resilience, and the development of effective, sustainable public safety strategies globally.
Voter education programme at UTAR provides insights into Malaysia's electoral process

The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) at UTAR hosted the Voter Education Programme, presented by the Election Academy of Malaysia’s Election Commission. The initiative aimed to equip staff and students with accurate knowledge of the electoral process, fostering informed and responsible citizens. Participants engaged in simulations of voting and vote-counting, role-play exercises, and quizzes, learning about inclusivity, governance, and democratic responsibilities. The programme strengthened civic awareness, encouraged active participation, and highlighted the critical role of democracy in shaping a fair and just society.
Public lecture on trends and crises in social science research

The Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) at UTAR Kampar Campus hosted a hybrid public lecture by Adjunct Professor N. Prabha Unnithan from Colorado State University, titled Trends and Crises in Social Science Research. Prof Prabha discussed six key crises in social science research, including authorship, peer-review bias, reproducibility, journal proliferation, predatory publishing, and plagiarism, highlighting their impact on academic integrity. The lecture, attended by faculty, students, and the public, concluded with a Q&A, inspiring participants to address challenges and uphold research excellence.
Insights on becoming a leader with passion and purpose

The “Formula for Life: 5 L + 3Q + 2H – Insights and Strategies for Future Leaders” talk by Mr Yusuf Hashim at UTAR Kampar Campus inspired participants to balance leadership with a fulfilling life. Drawing from his Shell management experience, he shared leadership qualities like helicopter vision, analysis, imagination, and sense of reality, alongside integrity, empathy, ethics, and strategic thinking. Mr Yusuf also highlighted sustainability, AI, and pursuing passions, sharing his global travel, photography, and adventure experiences to illustrate living a purposeful, well-rounded life.
Lecture on the translation and dissemination of African adventures in the late Qing dynasty

UTAR hosted a lecture titled Traversing the Dark Continent: Translating and Dissemination of David Livingstone’s African Adventures in Late Qing China at Heritage Hall, Kampar Campus, delivered by Prof Guan Kean-Fung from Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, and moderated by Dr Ng Bung Chen. The talk explored how late Qing translators used Africa as a metaphor to reflect China’s political and cultural anxieties, highlighting David Livingstone’s influence on Chinese intellectual circles. Participants engaged in discussions on translation and cultural exchange.
Challenges of digital reputation and reality of social media talk by DSS

The Department of Safety and Security (DSS) of Kampar Campus organised a talk titled Digital Reputation: Challenges and Reality of Social Media on 14 November 2024 at UTAR Kampar Campus. The event featured Deputy Director of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Ts Faizul Azlee Mahat from the Perak Office. Ts Faizul, a graduate of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, has been serving with the MCMC since 2010. The talk was also attended by DSS Kampar Campus Head Mr Wong Kean Loong and UTAR staff.
Campus dialogue by TCLC and FCI promotes media and information literacy

The Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies (TCLC), in collaboration with UTAR’s Department of Mass Communication, hosted a campus dialogue on Media and Information Literacy at Sungai Long Campus. The event addressed disinformation, fake news, and fact-checking, helping students navigate social media responsibly. Journalists from The China Press shared industry insights, while students examined AI-generated content, misleading websites, and case studies. The dialogue fostered critical thinking, ethical media engagement, and awareness of accurate information, equipping students to participate responsibly in the information ecosystem.
Global innovations at International symposium on volunteer policing

Assoc Prof Dr Cheah Phaik Kin from UTAR’s Faculty of Arts and Social Science presented her research at the Edinburgh International Symposium on Volunteering in Policing at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. Her study highlighted how motivation and organisational support enhance work engagement among police volunteers in the Royal Malaysia Police Volunteer Reserve. The symposium brought together global experts to share insights on volunteer roles, innovation, and community impact. Dr Cheah’s work underscores the importance of supporting citizen volunteers in strengthening public safety and fostering resilient communities.

The PEACE Poster Competition 2023, themed Dare to Dream, was organised by UTAR’s Centre for Foundation Studies in collaboration with the Lions Clubs of Kampar and Tanjung Tualang. Held at UTAR Kampar Campus, the event encouraged 7–13-year-old students to express peace through art, fostering creativity and confidence. With 110 participants across two categories, the competition featured timed colouring and poster creation sessions, judged by UTAR academics and Lions Club representatives. Winners received trophies, certificates, and cash prizes, while all participants were recognised for their efforts, promoting peace and artistic expression among youth.
Celebrating merdeka with Go as ONE carnival 7.0

The Go As ONE Carnival 7.0 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus celebrated Malaysia’s 66th Merdeka, organised by the Department of Student Affairs. The event featured diverse activities, including a ChapTeh tournament, Merdeka singing contest, art and craft workshops, native plant sketching, local film screening of Ice Kacang Puppy Love with director Aniu, traditional games, quizzes, and performances by 24 Festive Drums and the Chinese Language Society. The carnival promoted unity, cultural appreciation, community engagement, and interactive learning, fostering connections among students, staff, and the public while celebrating the patriotic “Batik” spirit.

Assoc Prof Dr Cheah Phaik Kin from UTAR’s Faculty of Arts and Social Science delivered a talk on “Careers as an Academic and Volunteer Police Officer” at SMK Dato’ Zulkifli Muhammad, Slim River, as part of the Op Didik & Crime Prevention Programme. She shared insights from her dual career, motivating students to pursue higher education and contribute to community safety. The programme, supported by PDRM and PERKESO, included workshops, exhibitions, and interactive activities fostering leadership, awareness, and social responsibility among youth.

H.E. Michalis Rokas, EU Ambassador to Malaysia, visited UTAR Sungai Long Campus to discuss EU-Malaysia relations and Indo-Pacific cooperation. He highlighted EU initiatives, including €10 billion under Global Gateway for sustainable ASEAN investments, and stressed European companies’ role in Malaysia’s economy. He also addressed global impacts of conflicts like the Ukraine war. The visit concluded with a campus tour, promoting international collaboration, student engagement, and potential academic and economic partnerships.
