12.3.1 Waste Tracking
UTAR tracks the volume of waste produced and recycled across its campuses. Following the Solid Waste Disposal – Landfill Policy, all waste streams are closely monitored using daily collection records. Effective waste separation and recycling initiatives allow precise measurement of total waste generated and the share that is diverted from landfill.
The bar chart below illustrates the University’s waste generation, recycling, and landfill disposal figures for 2022 to 2024. In 2024, UTAR generated approximately 70 metric tonnes of waste, of which 45 metric tonnes were recycled, and 25 metric tonnes sent to landfill. This reflects tangible progress in diverting waste from landfills and confirms that waste monitoring encompasses the entire University.

Program to reduce the use of paper and plastic on campus
UTAR is committed to reducing paper and plastic waste by promoting sustainable practices across its campuses. The University encourages the use of digital documents, online forms, e-signatures, and electronic communication to minimise paper consumption. When printing is necessary, double-sided printing and the use of recycled paper are encouraged. To reduce plastic waste, UTAR promotes the use of reusable bottles, cups, food containers, and cutlery, while discouraging single-use plastics during campus activities and events. Water refill stations are available to support a refill culture, and continuous awareness programmes encourage staff and students to adopt more sustainable habits. Together, these efforts help create a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable campus.
