UTAR and Samaiden Group bring solar energy to welfare home in Gopeng
9 August 2025
UTAR, in collaboration with Samaiden Group Berhad, launched the CSR initiative Shine Bright with Solar Energy at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim/Miskin Dahikmah, Gopeng. A 14.715 kWp rooftop solar PV system with 27 panels was installed, expected to cut emissions by 14 tCO₂e annually and reduce electricity costs by 88.94%. The event included educational talks, interactive sessions, and a colouring contest, promoting renewable energy awareness. The initiative reflects UTAR and Samaiden’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and advancing SDGs.

Faculty of Business and Finance welcomed guest lecturers Dr Lagraa Meriem and Dr Djouahra Saliha from Algeria, strengthening global academic collaboration. UTAR lantern festival 2025 celebrates heritage, caligraphy and friendship

UTAR celebrated the Lantern Festival and Chinese Calligraphy Week, showcasing Chinese cultural heritage and fostering community engagement. Jointly organised with the Confucius Institute, Dezhou University, and local partners, the event featured performances, calligraphy exhibitions, workshops, and competitions, attracting diverse participants. Visitors explored artistic traditions, created calligraphy, and learned cultural philosophies. ESG approach empowers stakeholders in sustainable cultural heritage tourism workshop with Ulster Universitym UK

UTAR and Ulster University jointly organised a workshop on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Approaches for Sustainable Cultural Heritage Tourism in Penang, bringing together 58 participants from academia, industry, and heritage organisations. The event highlighted community-based sustainable tourism, participatory design, and cultural heritage revitalisation, promoting practices that balance environmental, social, and economic needs. Through presentations, discussions, and networking, the workshop emphasised global collaboration and innovative strategies, demonstrating how inclusive planning and sustainable tourism can strengthen local communities and preserve cultural heritage for long-term societal benefit.
Echoes of Yesterday explores connection between past and present through art

The online exhibition “Echoes of Yesterday”, hosted on ArtSteps by the Centre for Foundation Studies, Sungai Long Campus, celebrated the connection between heritage, creativity, and community. Featuring student artworks from FHAD1024 Analytical Drawing, it explored how memories and cultural symbols continue to shape modern life. By transforming traditional art appreciation into an accessible digital experience, the exhibition encouraged cultural preservation, creative innovation, and inclusive participation—reflecting the importance of building sustainable, resilient, and culturally rich communities through art and shared history.
Seven awards at 2024 bamboo design and construction competition

Five teams from UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science achieved outstanding success at the 7th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area–ASEAN International University Bamboo Design and Construction Competition (Malaysia Level), winning seven awards, including Champion, First Runner-up, and Second Runner-up. Their innovative bamboo structures, inspired by Peranakan culture, traditional Malay crafts, and maritime heritage, showcased sustainable design and cultural storytelling. The competition highlighted UTAR students’ creativity, craftsmanship, and commitment to environmentally conscious, culturally enriched architectural innovation on an international stage.
UTAR hosts the PAM architectural student workshop for the first time

The 35th PAM Architectural Student Workshop, themed Inception, was hosted by UTAR Kampar Campus, bringing together over 300 participants from 20 higher education institutions across Asia. Two teams from UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science excelled at the Harmony Haven by Putrajaya Lake Design Competition 2024, winning the Champion and First Runner-up titles. Their projects, Cultural Currents and Branching Out to Harmony Haven, reimagined the Putrajaya lakeside as sustainable, nature-integrated spaces promoting cultural harmony and community interaction. By blending traditional Malaysian motifs with eco-friendly and passive design principles, both teams showcased innovative, environmentally conscious architecture that fosters sustainable urban living and enriches public engagement.

Two UTAR architecture students, Lim Wan Jing and Candy Chan, earned international recognition at the 2024 Belt and Road International Student Competition on Digital Architectural Design & Urban Revival Track. Their entries explored heritage preservation and urban transformation through creative design. Lim’s Heritage Odyssey celebrated Batu Arang’s industrial past through adaptive reuse, while Chan’s Nature’s Canvas merged heritage architecture with digital technologies. CycleDios Campus Bike Share Service
1 September 2024
UTAR launched the CycleDios Campus Bike Share Service at its Kampar Campus to promote sustainable mobility and healthy lifestyles. Featuring around 70 solar-powered smart bicycles with LED lights and smart locks, the initiative enables students and staff to commute efficiently while reducing carbon emissions. By encouraging cycling, UTAR enhances air quality and fosters an environmentally responsible campus culture. Users can easily register via the official app and access the service using a convenient pass card.
Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Debut Malaysia Tour 2024

The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s Debut Malaysia Tour 2024 captivated audiences with three days of performances celebrating cultural heritage through music. Held from 3 to 7 August, the concerts featured classical masterpieces, traditional compositions, and beloved film soundtracks by Joe Hisaishi and P. Ramlee. The event promoted cross-cultural appreciation, community connection, and the preservation of artistic traditions while integrating them into modern urban life, fostering a shared cultural experience that resonated across generations.

Seven Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Tourism Destination Marketing students visited Royal Belum State Park in Temenggor, Perak, gaining insights into nature conservation and sustainable tourism. The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) of UTAR Sungai Long Campus collaborated with the Central 19 Community Garden for a hands-on gardening and gotong-royong activity in Petaling Jaya. Third Prize in Innovation Competition

A team of Faculty of Information and Communication Technology students — Lee Wei Song, Kuek En Yee, Kwong Guan Yuan, and Loh Jia Yee — won third prize at the 3rd Malaysian-China Youth Innovation Competition held at Xiamen University Malaysia. Their project, selected from over 50 entries among 380 participants from 20 universities, showcased innovative solutions for sustainable and resilient urban development, contributing to smarter and safer cities. The team received a cash prize of RM1,000 and recognition for advancing sustainable urban innovation.
International Forum on Smart Cities: Housing for Future

The International Forum on Smart Cities: Housing for Future, jointly organised by UTAR’s Faculty of Accountancy and Management and the Centre for Entrepreneurial Sustainability, brought together regional experts to discuss innovative approaches to sustainable urban living. The forum explored smart housing design, renewable technologies, and policy frameworks that support eco-efficient communities. Through collaboration and shared insights, participants identified strategies to create resilient, inclusive, and livable smart cities that prioritise environmental stewardship and quality of life for future generations.
UTAR staff promote nature journaling and give out air-purifying plants at Hari Sukan Negara

UTAR participated as an exhibitor at the “Hari Sukan Negara Daerah Hulu Langat & Program Bandar Baru Bangi Pagi Tanpa Kenderaan 2023” at Taman Tasik Cempaka. Representatives from the Department of Student Affairs and Centre for Foundation Studies promoted nature journaling and encouraged the public to plant air-purifying indoor plants. Attendees actively engaged with the exhibits, and all plants were distributed. The UTAR Green Campus Committee received a certificate of appreciation from Majlis Perbandaran Kajang for their contribution in raising awareness on sustainability and fostering eco-friendly practices.
Celebrating Merdeka with go As One Carnival 7.0

UTAR Sungai Long Campus celebrated Malaysia’s 66th Merdeka with Go As ONE Carnival 7.0, featuring diverse activities including a ChapTeh tournament, Merdeka singing contest, board games, traditional games, and art workshops. Visitors enjoyed local film screenings, creative production sharing, patriotic clips, and performances by 24 Festive Drums and the Chinese Language Society. The event also included mindfulness booths, native plant sketching, and a meet-and-greet with director Aniu. The carnival fostered unity, cultural appreciation, and engagement among the UTAR community and the public.
Inbound students from sungai long campus explores Malacca's heritage

A group of UTAR international exchange students explored Malacca on a heritage city tour, guided by the Centre for Extension Education. They visited the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre, witnessing baby turtles and learning about environmental conservation. The tour included historical sites such as A'Famosa Fort, St. Paul’s Church, and the Stadthuys, offering insights into Malacca’s rich past. Students also experienced local cuisine at Jonker Street, enhancing cultural appreciation, fostering exchange, and deepening understanding of heritage, conservation, and regional culinary traditions.

UTAR hosted Bunkasai: Haru Matsuri, a celebration of Japanese sub-culture, featuring game and food booths, merchandise sales, and cosplay activities. The highlight was the cosplay competition, part of Japanese Language and Cultural Week, where students and staff showcased their creativity and talent by dressing as anime or manga characters. Judged by experienced cosplayers, the top prize was awarded to Ban Cong Hao for his detailed Chainsaw Man costume. The event attracted large participation, promoting cultural appreciation, creativity, and engagement among the UTAR community.
