He highlighted embedding values, ethics, and human creativity alongside AI, addressing risks like bias and privacy issues, while promoting adaptability and critical thinking. On 4 September, he discussed Women's Empowerment and Language Proficiency, showcasing Kerala’s education and initiatives driving gender equality, leadership, and inclusive development.
UTAR-NPTU collaborations advance the SDGs

UTAR hosted two NPTU delegations to promote inclusive education and social responsibility. Students engaged in STEAM projects at rural schools, developing critical thinking, leadership, and collaboration skills. The second programme focused on persons with disabilities, fostering empathy, wellbeing, and social integration. Through community engagement, mentorship, and hands-on activities, participants enhanced cultural intelligence and adaptability, while local communities gained educational support and empowerment, creating equitable opportunities and reducing social disparities across diverse groups.

Workshop on enhancing workplace diversity prepares students for global careers

Students from the Cross Cultural Management course attended the “Bridging Cultures: Enhancing Workplace Diversity” workshop at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. Organised by the Department of International Business, Faculty of Accountancy and Management, the session featured speakers Mr Nicholas Hooi and Ms Chia K Rou, who emphasised the importance of cultural intelligence. Through quizzes and group discussions, students explored biases and strategies for inclusivity. The workshop inspired participants to champion diversity, equipping them with practical skills to foster inclusive workplaces in their future careers.
Exploring global cultural exchange through ancient Chinese texts exhibition

UTAR, in collaboration with Taiwan’s Center for Chinese Studies (CCS), is hosting the exhibition “A Shared Sky: The World of Chinese Texts and Cultural Exchange” at the UTAR Gallery, Kampar Campus, from 27 November 2024 to 6 January 2025. Officiated by CCS Deputy Director-General Dr Weng Chih-Tsung, UTAR Vice President Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, TECO Director Ms Charlin Chang, and UTAR Library Director Ms Ang Suan Sim, the exhibition features rare ancient Chinese manuscripts, emphasizing cultural preservation, scholarly exchange, and the enduring legacy of Chinese civilization.
UTAR forum educates 400+ attendees on tackling harassment and cyberbullying

UTAR’s Harassment and Cyberbully Forum, organised by the Centre for Healthy Minds and Wellbeing in collaboration with the Department of Student Affairs, was held at Sungai Long Campus. The forum addressed harassment and cyberbullying, covering legal rights, prevention strategies, and support resources. Speakers included Ms Tan Kim Kiek, Mr Leo Lourdes, and Ms Ariel Lim, moderated by CFS academic Cik Nurazrin Mohd Aidil. Through presentations and interactive discussions, over 400 participants, including students and staff, gained knowledge and tools to foster safer, more respectful online and offline environments.
FICT team secures first runner-up at Entrepreneur Colosseum 2024

A talented team of students from UTAR Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) emerged as the first runner-up at the prestigious Entrepreneur Colosseum (TEC) 2024. Their innovative project, “Enjoyable”, captivated the judges and earned the team a cash prize of RM10,000 for their exceptional work.

Vice President joins NPTU's anniversary and leadership forum

UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min and Dr Ong Kiah Ju represented UTAR at the 11th Anniversary and International University Presidential Forum hosted by Pingtung University (NPTU), Taiwan. The visit deepened academic and cultural ties through discussions on university social responsibility, regional transformation, and new partnerships with Mt. Dawu College. The event, attended by universities from Asia, Europe, and Canada, strengthened UTAR’s global collaborations and commitment to international education excellence.

The Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) Department of Mass Communication hosted the talk “The Power of Media and Creativity: Lessons for Future Communicators” at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. Delivered by Assoc Prof Dr Smith Boonchutima, President of the Asian Congress for Media and Communication, the session explored media’s influence and creativity’s role in shaping societal narratives. Through case studies, discussions, and exercises, participants gained insights into responsible communication, critical engagement with social media, and the transformative power of creativity in driving innovation and social change.
FSc participants in fundraising for the Salvation Army Ipoh Open Day 2024

The Faculty of Science (FSc) at UTAR took part in the fundraising event held on 7 September 2024 during The Salvation Army Ipoh Open Day, which aimed to support the welfare of children at the Salvation Army Children’s Home. The event was held at Jalan Kampar, Ipoh.
A total of 24 volunteers from UTAR contributed to this initiative, including 15 academics and administrative staff from FSc, one from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, and eight student helpers. The volunteers assisted in various capacities to ensure the success of the fundraising activities.

Community service at Kuen Cheng High School

The Department of Economics and Global Economics Society at UTAR organised a community service event at Kuen Cheng High School, distributing books on Chinese history and development to around 1,600 students. Dr Har Wai Mun presented the Baima Feima philosophy, highlighting its practical applications in business and personal growth. UTAR students also shared their academic experiences, emphasising soft skills and time management. The initiative promoted cross-cultural understanding, educational access, and opportunities for underrepresented students, fostering inclusivity and equitable learning pathways.

Ts Dr S. Suthashini, Head of UTAR’s Department of Information Systems, served as a panellist at the MCMC Research Symposium 2024, presenting on the adoption of Pelan Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) in remote areas to enhance connectivity in Malaysia. Organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the symposium, themed Advancing the Digital Ecosystem through Sustainable Connectivity, gathered researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to discuss digital transformation. Her insights received positive feedback, highlighting strategies for improving nationwide digital access and connectivity.

A UTAR delegation led by Prof Ts Dr Faidz bin Abd Rahman visited leading Indonesian universities and research institutions to strengthen academic and research collaborations. The visits fostered partnerships in joint research, co-supervision, staff exchanges, student mobility, and co-organised conferences. Third prize in innovation competition

A team of Faculty of Information and Communication Technology students, namely Lee Wei Song, Kuek En Yee, Kwong Guan Yuan and Loh Jia Yee, was one of the third prize winners at the 3rd Malaysian-China Youth Innovation Competition, held on 29 June 2024 at Xiamen University Malaysia. The team took home a cash prize of RM 1,000 as the winning prize.

Basic computer training courses for the disabled

UTAR held the Dual Blessing Computer Training Class Graduation Ceremony, celebrating six participants who completed a four-month IT course covering Windows basics and Google Apps. Conducted by UTAR CFS academics, the programme empowered persons with disabilities to gain essential digital skills. Awards recognised excellence, attendance, helpfulness, friendliness, and positive attitude. The initiative highlighted perseverance, self-confidence, and lifelong learning, fostering inclusivity, skill development, and community engagement, while inspiring participants and their families to pursue opportunities in the digital world.
The impact of budget 2024 on women, children, and students

Budget 2024, under the “Economic Reforms, Empowering the People” framework, allocates extensive resources to support vulnerable groups, including women, children, students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Initiatives include financial assistance, skill development, TVET and higher education support, special education facilities, and inclusive employment programmes. The budget also promotes lifelong learning, entrepreneurship, digital access, and healthcare, ensuring equitable opportunities and reducing social disparities. By combining education, training, and social welfare, the Government aims to empower underprivileged communities and enhance their overall wellbeing.
UTAR's impactful community service initiatives in 2023

In 2023, UTAR demonstrated its commitment to community service through 1,064 initiatives engaging over 352,000 participants, including students, staff, and the public. Activities ranged from ICT competitions and STEM and entrepreneurship carnivals to CSR projects supporting underprivileged communities, educational workshops on nanomaterials, and tuition programmes in Perak. These initiatives fostered practical learning, social responsibility, and innovation while empowering local communities. UTAR’s efforts highlighted its dedication to extending impact beyond campus, promoting education, creativity, and inclusive community development across Malaysia.
Eye Believe event by FCI final-year students bring blindness awareness

The Faculty of Creative Industries organised Eye Believe at Sungai Campus to raise awareness of the visually impaired community and promote inclusivity. Collaborating with SBM, MAB, and various partners, the event featured performances, product booths, interactive workshops, and a gallery showcasing artworks by visually impaired individuals. Attendees engaged in activities fostering collaboration, understanding, and empathy, such as lantern-making sessions. Through these initiatives, FCI students and the community highlighted the importance of inclusivity, empowering the visually impaired while encouraging social awareness and meaningful engagement.
